![]() ![]() VR is a kind of puppeteering, in which the user deploys a weird, imperfect apparatus to shepherd a strange, lifeless creature or machine through scenarios. It’s no accident that John Cusak’s character in Being John Malkovich was a puppeteer. ![]() No, VR is about occupying another agency, as if you were inside it like a pilot in a cockpit, controlling it at a remove. VR isn’t about being fooled into thinking that you’re in another reality, even if the Oculus and its ilk do effectively trick your animal brain into believing that you are somewhere else. The absurd premise of the film-that a secret portal in between the floors of an office building leads into the head of the actor John Malkovich-actually bears startling similarity to the actual experience of contemporary virtual reality. In that respect, perhaps there is still one 1990s pop culture reference that does prefigure the age of VR that we are about to enter: Spike Jonze’s 1999 film Being John Malkovich. It firmly plants virtual players’ physical bodies in the same place as their virtual ones. In Darknet, a cyberpunk hacking game for Oculus Rift, the game’s makers have opted for an abstract representation of cyberspace as a floating map of linked nodes positioned in front of a stationary operator. In both cases, a persistent, simulated glass enclosure both situates players and gives them something clear and obvious to control-and something that is not themselves, but a surrogate. Another is ADR1FT, a near-earth-orbit space station escape game that might be best described as a playable version of Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film Gravity. One of Oculus’s launch titles is Eve: Valkyrie, a space dogfight shooter game that puts the player inside the cockpit of a vessel. Another is to build the experience itself around the equivalent of a virtual nose: something like a helmet or a cockpit. Rendering a false, CG nose is one effective solution, because it helps diffuse the effects of sensory conflict. The DLC expands on all of the game’s stories, making it feel like a much more complete package and doesn’t add much to the game’s overall price. One way to combat such distress is to create a point of reference inside the virtual world. Thanks to the Last Call DLC, this game is much more polished, and while we’ve always liked it we’d now say we absolutely adore it. Generally, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge makes you feel like Han Solo. You can also take part in a couple of short adventures from the perspective of other characters in the Star Wars Universe like a Jedi padawan and Bounty Hunter droid. When pirates attack you hit the escape pods and crash land on Batuu, where you'll have to battle enemies and find clues to recover your lost cargo. You take on the role of a droid repair technician aboard a starship. ![]() It sees some of our all-time favorite characters, like R2-D2, C-3PO and even Yoda, join us on a space adventure to the planet Batuu. This is another way VR makes nerd dreams come true, immersing you in George Lucas' world like never before. If you're a fan of Star Wars, then you'll love Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge's story. Puzzles make clever use of 3D space and yes, the gunplay is great, too. Instead of a gravity gun, you use gravity gloves to pull things towards you and let them go, which is persistently fun to do. Half-Life: Alyx knows how to play with haptics in a way that feels especially good in VR and is still true to the world of the game. This game is definitely worth looking into the best PC for VR gaming, just so you can make the most of the world. Half-Life Alyx cannibalizes Half-Life 3 in the best way possible, taking a game we will never see and acknowledging the dreams we had for it. It's a showcase of exciting VR technology, it looks and sounds fantastic, and it has a great story, even though it's not the Half-Life sequel fans have been waiting for. Alyx is generally considered to be one of the best VR games out there and it is easy to see why. Half-Life: Alyx is available exclusively on Steam – if you have a gaming PC you can play Alyx through Steam VR with a special Oculus Link cable. ![]()
